Pumpkin Spice SVG for Mugs and Tumblers

Pumpkin Spice SVG for Mugs and Tumblers design on a white mug

Some designs are for the mug you reach for every morning from September on. This one sets pumpkin in a rounded brush script over a chunky SPICE, with a small pumpkin tucked in at the end of the line. Cut it in orange vinyl and it’s done.

There are two files, and we’ll be upfront about why only two. The mug file is 3.6 in wide in adhesive vinyl, sized for a standard coffee mug or a 20 to 30 oz tumbler. The shirt file is 10.1 in wide in iron-on (HTV) and adds a line of spaced capitals underneath: & EVERYTHING NICE.

Why there’s no smaller version

Skinny tumblers were the obvious next size, and this script can’t go there. Brush lettering like this has tight spots where one letter joins the next, plus a small counter in each p and a loop in the k. At 3.6 in wide those joins and holes pass our vinyl check (no stroke under 0.035 in, no gap too narrow to weed). That’s the floor for this script, so the smallest file stops there rather than giving you something that fights you on the mat.

If a surface can’t fit a 3.6 x 1.6 in design, pick a simpler design for it. Shrinking this one in Design Space will cut, but you’ll be weeding slivers that tear.

How the lettering fits together

The script is Pacifico and the capitals are Lilita One, a heavy rounded display face. The tail of the second p in pumpkin drops down into the top of SPICE, and a thin gap is cut around it where it meets the P, so the script and the capitals stay separate pieces with clean edges. On the mug file the dot on the i is joined to its stem by a short bridge, so the whole script is one piece. On the shirt file the dot is its own small piece. The pumpkin at the end is a chunky five-lobe shape with two curved grooves cut out and a stem and leaf on top, simplified on purpose so it survives at mug size.

On the shirt file, the script is a little narrower relative to SPICE, and the tagline line is set in Archivo Black with wide letter spacing, led by a script ampersand from Pacifico to match pumpkin. Every character in that line is a separate piece, so lift the whole design on the carrier sheet, not letter by letter.

What you need

  • Cutting machine and a standard grip mat
  • Permanent adhesive vinyl and transfer tape for a mug or tumbler
  • Iron-on (HTV) for a shirt or sweatshirt
  • Weeding hook
  • Rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth to clean the mug
  • Heat press, EasyPress or iron and a pressing sheet (shirt only)

Putting it on a mug or tumbler

  1. Upload the mug file. In Design Space use Upload > Upload Image > Browse. The upload guide has the details. Silhouette Studio users need Designer Edition for SVGs or can use the DXF.
  2. Leave it at 3.6 in wide. That’s the checked size. You can go a bit bigger on a wide tumbler.
  3. Cut. Pick your vinyl on the Make screen. Adhesive vinyl isn’t mirrored.
  4. Weed. Pull the background away slowly and low. Then pick out the counters in the p’s, the P and the pumpkin’s two grooves.
  5. Apply. Wipe the mug with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Lay transfer tape over the design, burnish, peel the backing, and set the middle of the design down first. Smooth outward toward each end, then peel the tape back at a sharp angle.

A mug curves away from you on both sides, so a 3.6 in design wants to wrinkle at the ends. Cut the transfer tape into a slightly narrower strip than usual, or snip small slits in the tape above and below the letters so it can flex. Our vinyl-on-a-mug guide and tumbler decal guide go deeper on getting a flat finish.

Putting it on a shirt

Upload the 10.1 in shirt file, choose your iron-on material (Design Space turns on Mirror for iron-on automatically; check the Mirror toggle on the Prepare screen), and load the HTV shiny side down. Weed, then press with the settings for your exact HTV and fabric from the Cricut Heat Guide or the maker’s instructions. The tagline letters are small, so press the whole design through a pressing sheet and let the carrier cool if your HTV says cool peel. For a first project, your first Cricut shirt covers placement.

Sizes for different items

Item File Width
Standard coffee mug Mug 3.6 in
20 to 30 oz tumbler Mug 3.6 to 4.5 in
Youth shirt Mug file, scaled up, in HTV 7 to 8 in
Adult shirt or sweatshirt Shirt 10.1 in
Tote bag or pillow cover Shirt 10.1 to 12 in

That youth-shirt row is a workaround, and it’s a safe one. The mug file passed at 3.6 in; blowing it up to 7 or 8 in roughly doubles every stroke and gap, which leaves plenty of margin even for thicker HTV. What we can’t vouch for is shrinking the shirt file below 10.1 in, because its tagline is the smallest lettering in the download.

Color and material ideas

Orange on white is the classic. Cream vinyl on a speckled brown mug or a matte black tumbler works too. On a shirt, try the design in a single color of HTV on a mustard or heather tee, or cut the whole thing in white on rust.

It fits right in with other fall files: Hey There Pumpkin for a matching shirt, Hello Fall for a sign, or plain pumpkin shapes if you want just the icon.

Troubleshooting

If the i dot on the shirt file or one of the small tagline letters comes up with the background, lay it back down with the tip of your hook before you apply transfer tape. If the ends of the script lift on a mug after a day or two, the surface probably wasn’t clean or the vinyl wasn’t burnished at the curve. Follow the vinyl maker’s care instructions for washing.

Questions

What size is the Pumpkin Spice mug design?

3.6 in wide and about 1.6 in tall, sized for a standard mug or a 20 to 30 oz tumbler.

Can I make it smaller for a skinny tumbler?

We don’t recommend it. 3.6 in is the smallest size where the script cut clean in our check; smaller, the joins and letter holes get too tight to weed.

Can I use the mug file on a shirt?

Yes. Scale it up in HTV for a youth shirt, around 7 to 8 in. Scaling up makes every part wider, so it stays easy to cut.

Can I sell mugs made with this file?

Yes, up to 500 handmade items per design, but not the digital file. See the license page.
