Want a classic monogram? You need a frame, a letter and a way to center one inside the other. This free scalloped circle monogram frame SVG handles the first part and shows you the second.
The frame has a wavy scalloped edge, then a thin ring of open space, then a fine inner ring. It comes in two sizes: 5 in (5.1 x 5.06 in, checked for iron-on) for shirts, totes and onesies, and 3 in (3.1 x 3.07 in, checked for adhesive vinyl) for tumblers, mugs and small labels. At each size you get three files: the blank frame, a single-initial “M” example and a three-letter “AMS” example.

| Scalloped monogram M (5in) | 5.12 × 5.12 in | HTV (iron-on) | 1 layer | ✓ Cut-checked |
| Scalloped three-letter monogram (5in) | 5.12 × 5.12 in | HTV (iron-on) | 1 layer | ✓ Cut-checked |

What’s in the six files
The blank frames are the ones you’ll use most, since you add your own letters. The M and AMS files are finished examples. If your initials happen to match, cut them as they are. If not, they show you the proportions to copy: a single initial fills about 60 percent of the inner circle’s height, and a three-letter monogram has a large center letter with two smaller ones on either side.
The letters are Playfair Display SC, a bold serif with sharp, thin serifs. In our example files we thickened the letters slightly so those serifs hold up at 3 in. Every file is one welded path and passed our cut check at its listed size, including the thin inner ring and the narrow gap between it and the scalloped band.
How three-letter monograms are ordered
In the traditional style for one person, the last-name initial goes in the middle and is larger, with the first initial on the left and the middle initial on the right. So our “AMS” example belongs to someone whose first name starts with A, last name with M and middle name with S. Always double-check the order with the person before you cut.
What you need
- Iron-on vinyl (HTV) for the 5 in size on fabric
- Permanent adhesive vinyl for the 3 in size on tumblers and mugs
- Standard grip mat
- Weeding hook
- Transfer tape (adhesive vinyl only)
- Heat press or iron and pressing pad
Adding your initials in Design Space
- Upload a blank frame. Choose Upload > Upload Image and pick scalloped-frame-blank-5in.svg or the 3 in version. Our upload guide walks through it.
- Add the letters. For one initial, click Text, type the letter and choose a font. For three letters, make three separate text boxes so you can size the middle one bigger. Playfair Display SC is free on Google Fonts if you want to match our examples; install it and it appears among your system fonts.
- Size them to sit inside the inner ring with a clear gap all around. Use our M and AMS files as a size guide.
- Center. Select the frame and the letters, then use Align > Center Horizontally and Align > Center Vertically. For three letters, line up the small letters with each other first.
- Attach. Select everything and click Attach so the letters cut exactly where you placed them inside the frame.
- Cut. For iron-on, check that Mirror is on for that mat in the Make screen; for adhesive vinyl, leave it off.
Letters you add haven’t been through our cut check. Delicate serifs and scripts can get too thin at 3 in. If you change the font, test cut a single letter on scrap first.
Weeding and applying
The gap between the scalloped band and the inner ring is a narrow strip, and it’s the part to go slowly on. Pull it out as one continuous ring with your hook, working around the circle rather than yanking it straight up. The letters float free inside the inner ring. On iron-on, the carrier sheet keeps them in place. On adhesive vinyl, let the transfer tape pick up the whole monogram at once so nothing shifts.
For a shirt, onesie or tote, press using the time and temperature for your iron-on and fabric from the Cricut Heat Guide or the vinyl maker. How to make your first shirt covers placement and peeling. For a tumbler, apply from the center out; vinyl on a mug has the details for curves.
Which size where
| Item | File size | Width | Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tumbler, mug, water bottle | 3 in | 3.1 to 3.5 in | Permanent adhesive vinyl |
| Wide-mouth jar lid or small canister | 3 in | 3.1 in | Permanent adhesive vinyl |
| Baby onesie or toddler tee | 5 in | 5.1 in | Iron-on |
| Tote bag or sweatshirt | 5 in | 5.1 to 8 in | Iron-on |
| Throw pillow | 5 in | 8 to 11 in | Iron-on |
Keep to the listed widths or larger. A left-chest monogram on an adult shirt is usually smaller than 5 in, and the 3 in file was checked for adhesive vinyl, not iron-on, which needs heavier minimums. If you want a chest monogram, test cut the 3 in file in your iron-on before committing a shirt.
Style ideas
- Frame in one color, letters in another. Hide the letters on one copy and the frame on another with the Contour tool, cut each color, and apply them one after the other. They don’t overlap, so it’s simpler than true layering, though our HTV layering guide still helps with lining up and pressing twice.
- Pink frame, white letters on a navy tote.
- Gold adhesive vinyl on a white ceramic mug.
Prefer a different frame? Our circle frame set has five styles, including double line, beaded and a split name band, and the laurel wreath monogram comes with every letter from A to Z already in place.
Questions
How do you put a monogram in a circle frame in Cricut Design Space?
Upload the blank frame, add your initials with the Text tool, size them to fit inside the inner ring, center everything with Align, then Attach so the letters cut in place.
What order do the letters go in a three-letter monogram?
For one person, the traditional order is first initial, last initial (larger, in the middle), then middle initial. Check with the person before cutting.
What size should a monogram be on a tumbler?
Use the 3 in file, which is 3.1 x 3.07 in and was checked for adhesive vinyl. Go up to about 3.5 in if the tumbler has room.
