Few shapes say Halloween as fast as a black cat. You don’t need a face, a hat or a pumpkin; the ears and the tail do all of it. This black cat SVG has four versions: a calm sitting cat, a scaredy cat with its back arched, a cat sitting in the curve of a crescent moon, and a SCAREDY CAT shirt design.
The three cat-only files are built for adhesive vinyl. The sitting cat is 4.62 x 6.12 in, the arched cat 6.12 x 6.12 in, and the moon scene 10.38 x 10.12 in for a sign or a window. The shirt design is 10.12 x 5.5 in, checked for iron-on.

The four cats
Sitting cat. She’s in profile facing left, chest out, tail curling up behind her. Two details keep her from being a flat blob: a small slanted eye cut out of the head, and a thin curved line that marks the back leg. That line opens from the bottom edge, so the cat stays one piece. Only the eye is a hole to weed.
Arched cat. The classic spooked-cat pose: back hunched high, tail straight up with a hook at the end, four stiff legs and the head held low. It’s one shape plus the eye, with little rounded feet so the leg ends don’t taper to points that would tear.
Cat on the moon. A fat crescent moon with the sitting cat perched in its hollow, looking out toward two stars. The cat and moon are welded into one piece, so there’s no lining up. The stars are separate. There are five outlines in all: the moon and cat, the eye, the leg line and the two stars.
Scaredy Cat shirt. The arched cat stands on top of SCAREDY CAT, set in Luckiest Guy. Its feet stop just short of the letters, with a small gap, so the cat and the words weed as separate pieces and nothing gets stuck in a tight corner.
Each file passed our cut check at its listed size: no strokes too thin, no pieces too small, no slivers too narrow to weed. When you weed, the parts that need care are the small eye slits and the thin leg line.
What you need
- Black adhesive vinyl: permanent for outdoor signs, removable for walls and windows
- Black iron-on (HTV) for the shirt
- Standard grip mat
- Weeding hook
- Transfer tape
- A blank sign, window or shirt
Making the moon sign
The moon file is the showpiece, and it’s also the easiest to weed: one big shape, a few small holes.
- Upload. In Design Space, click Upload in the design panel, then Upload Image and Browse. See the upload guide if it’s your first time.
- Size. It opens at 10.38 x 10.12 in, which fits a 12×12 mat. For a sign bigger than that, scale up with the lock closed and cut on a 12×24 mat if your machine takes one.
- Cut. Click Make, choose your vinyl, and cut. No mirroring for adhesive vinyl on the front of a sign.
- Weed. Peel the background, then lift the eye and the leg line out of the cat. The leg line is long and thin, so start at one end and pull slowly along it.
- Transfer. Cover it with transfer tape, burnish well, especially around the stars, and apply from the center outward so no bubble gets trapped under the moon.
Painting a round or square board first gives the moon something to sit against. A dark purple or navy with black vinyl is subtle; a pale gray or cream background makes the silhouette pop from across the yard. Choosing vinyl colors that read from a distance goes into contrast in more detail.
On a window, the moon scene works from both sides because the cat is a silhouette. Apply it to the inside of the glass so it stays out of the weather, and use removable vinyl or window cling so it comes off cleanly after Halloween.
Making the shirt
Upload the shirt file and check that it reads 10.12 in wide. Click Make and choose your iron-on; Design Space turns Mirror on automatically for iron-on materials, but check that SCAREDY CAT reads backward in the preview. Cut with the shiny side down, weed, and press using Cricut’s Heat Guide or your iron-on maker’s settings. If it’s your first shirt, how to make your first shirt with a Cricut has the full walkthrough.
| Project | File | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Porch sign or round wood sign | Cat on the moon | 10.38 in or larger |
| Front window | Cat on the moon, or arched cat | 10.38 in, or 6.12 in |
| Wall, door or cabinet decal | Sitting or arched cat | 6.12 in tall or larger |
| Tumbler, lantern, jar | Sitting cat | 6.12 in tall |
| Adult shirt or sweatshirt | Scaredy Cat | 10.12 to 12 in wide |
These were all checked at their listed sizes. Shrinking one to fit a mug narrows the eye slit and the leg line past what weeds cleanly, so for a small spot, pick a design built small rather than scaling a cat down.
A few more ideas
Put a sitting cat at the bottom of a front window and an arched cat on the opposite side, so they look like they’ve spotted each other. Pair the moon scene with a few extra stars from our moon and stars SVG across the top of the glass. And for a cat lover who’ll wear it past October, the Cat Mom SVG works year-round.
If the eye won’t come out during weeding, the blade isn’t getting through at that small, tight curve. Check your blade and material setting, and see Cricut not cutting all the way through for the usual fixes.
Questions
Is the black cat SVG one piece?
Yes. Each cat is a single shape with the eye cut out as a hole. On the moon file, the cat and moon are welded together and only the two stars are separate.
What size is the black cat on the moon sign?
It’s 10.38 x 10.12 in, which fits a standard 12×12 mat. You can scale it up for a bigger sign.
Can I put the Scaredy Cat design on a kid’s shirt?
The file is sized and checked for an adult shirt at 10.12 in. We didn’t check it smaller, so shrinking it for a small kid’s shirt isn’t something we can vouch for.
