Teacher Appreciation Week sneaks up every May, and a tote bag or mug with “Teach, love, inspire” on it is one of the few gifts a teacher will actually use. This free file stacks the three words: TEACH and INSPIRE in heavy block capitals, with love in a looping script between them.
You get it in two sizes. The iron-on version is 9.1 x 5.47 in, built for a canvas tote or an adult shirt. The mug version is 3.3 x 2.01 in, built for permanent adhesive vinyl on a standard coffee mug.

How the design is built
Each file is a single navy layer, so you cut it from one sheet of vinyl. The script word is welded into one continuous piece: the “l”, “o”, “v” and “e” join into a single shape instead of four overlapping letters, which means your blade traces each edge once and you weed “love” as one strip.
The block words sit just clear of the script. There’s a small gap above and below love so none of the letters touch, and no sliver of vinyl gets trapped between the loop of the “l” and the bottom of TEACH.
We checked both files at their listed sizes. The tote file passed the iron-on check (iron-on gets a wider minimum stroke than adhesive vinyl), and the mug file passed the adhesive-vinyl check at 3.3 in wide. No stroke or gap in either one falls under the minimum for its material, and there are no stray bits small enough to vanish on the mat. Here’s what that check looks for.
What you need
- A Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine and a standard grip mat
- Iron-on (HTV) for the tote or shirt, or permanent adhesive vinyl for the mug
- Weeding hook
- Transfer tape (mug version only)
- Heat press, EasyPress or household iron, plus a pressing pillow or towel (tote version)
- A blank canvas tote, cotton shirt, or ceramic mug
How to make the tote bag
- Upload the SVG. In Cricut Design Space, click Upload on the left panel, then Upload Image and Browse to pick teach-love-inspire.svg from the unzipped folder. New to this? Our upload walkthrough covers desktop and the app. Silhouette Studio’s free Basic Edition opens the DXF file; the SVG needs Designer Edition or higher.
- Check the size. It should land at 9.1 in wide. If it doesn’t, type 9.1 into the width box on the Edit bar with the lock closed so the height follows.
- Mirror it. On the mat preview, turn on Mirror. Iron-on is cut shiny side down, so the design has to be flipped. Design Space will usually mirror for you when you pick an iron-on material, but check the preview anyway.
- Pick your material and cut. In the Make screen, choose the setting that matches your iron-on brand (Browse All Materials if it’s not in the popular list). Place the HTV shiny side down on the mat.
- Weed. Pull the background away, then pick out the counters: the holes in the A and R of TEACH and INSPIRE, the P’s bowl, and the small eye inside the script “e”.
- Press. Use the time, temperature and pressure your vinyl’s maker lists. For Cricut iron-on, the Cricut Heat Guide gives exact settings for your blank and your press. Canvas totes have seams and handles, so put a pressing pillow or folded towel inside to get flat, even contact.
For the mug
Upload teach-love-inspire-mug.svg, leave mirror off, and cut from permanent adhesive vinyl. After weeding, cover it with transfer tape, burnish, and peel the backing. Place the center of the design first and smooth outward so the vinyl follows the curve. Scaling up is always safe. Going below the listed size is where trouble starts: the iron-on file was checked at 9.1 in, and shrinking it for a youth shirt pulls the gap between love and the block words tighter. If you need it smaller for iron-on, do a small test cut first. Don’t shrink the mug file below 3.3 in.
A clipboard is a smart pick if you’re making a set for a whole grade team. It’s flat, cheap and takes adhesive vinyl without any curve to fight.
Color and material ideas
Navy on a natural canvas tote is the classic, but the design is one color, so any single HTV works. Red on cream reads as schoolhouse. Metallic gold on black looks sharp on a tumbler. If you like the idea of two colors, you could cut “love” separately in a second color: in Design Space, you’d need to hide the block words with the Contour tool on one copy and hide the script on another, then layer them. For the mug, glossy permanent vinyl in a darker color stands out best on a white mug.
If something goes wrong
The most common snag with this file is the counter inside the script “e”. It’s the smallest opening in the design, and on the mug version it’s small enough that a dull blade can leave it half-attached. Look at it before you lift the whole sheet. If the edges look fuzzy, recut rather than tearing it free, and check our list of fixes for a Cricut that won’t cut through.
If the script letters peel up with the backing on the tote, the vinyl didn’t get enough heat or pressure; press again with the carrier sheet back on.

What size should the design be on a tote bag?
The iron-on file opens at 9.1 in wide, which suits most standard canvas totes. Go up to about 10 in on a larger bag.
Can I put the mug version on a tumbler?
Yes. At 3.3 in wide it fits most 16 to 20 oz tumblers. Use permanent adhesive vinyl and apply it the same way as on a mug, center first.
Why do I need to mirror the tote design?
Iron-on vinyl is cut with the shiny carrier face down, so the machine cuts the back of the design. Mirroring flips it so it reads correctly once you press it.
